Protestants raise many objections to the Catholic faith. Some are based on misunderstandings of what the Church actually teaches. Others involve genuine theological disagreements. And some involve both.
This collection examines those objections in light of Scripture, history, and Catholic teaching. Each objection links to an article explaining the Catholic position and addressing the arguments against it.

General
Catholics aren't really Christians.
Catholicism is a corruption of original Christianity.
The Catholic Church was founded by Constantine.
Catholic doctrines were invented centuries after the apostles.
Jesus never established an authoritative teaching Church.
There is no single visible Church that can claim to be the Church Christ founded.
The Catholic Church teaches that all non-Catholics are going to hell.
The pope
Jesus was referring to Peter's confession, not Peter himself, as the rock in Matthew 16:18.
Jesus is the foundation of the Church, so Peter cannot also be its foundation.
Paul taught that it was wrong to follow Peter instead of Christ.
Paul publicly rebuked Peter, proving Peter had no special authority.
There is no biblical or historical evidence that Peter ever went to Rome.
The early Church had no papacy.
Only God is infallible, so no human teaching authority can be infallible.
Catholics believe the pope can never be wrong.
Catholics believe the pope receives new revelations from God.
Catholics believe the pope can change established doctrines.
Calling the pope "Holy Father" is blasphemous.
Catholic teachings and practices
Catholics believe every Church discipline is an unchangeable doctrine.
All sins are equally serious, so the distinction between mortal and venial sin is unbiblical.
Contraception is responsible stewardship, not a sin.
The Catholic Church forbids priests to marry, which Paul calls a teaching of demons.
Jesus forbade calling religious leaders “Father.”
Jesus condemned repetitive prayers, so Catholics shouldn't pray the rosary.
Catholics believe celibacy is required because marriage is sinful.

History
The Catholic Church slaughtered 68 million people during the Middle Ages.
The Inquisition proves that the Catholic Church cannot be Christ's Church.

Geocentrism
The Catholic Church teaches that the Sun revolves around Earth.
The Catholic Church opposed science and condemned Galileo for proving that Earth moves.
———— Mary and the Saints ————
The Communion of Saints
Catholics pray to dead people.
Catholics believe they need saints because they cannot approach God directly.
There is only one mediator between God and man, so asking saints to intercede is wrong.
The Bible doesn't authorize Christians to ask saints to pray for them.
Catholics believe the saints are omniscient or omnipresent.
Catholics believe saints have supernatural powers of their own.
The Blessed Virgin Mary
Catholics believe Mary is a goddess.
Catholics put Mary on the same level as Jesus.
Catholics worship Mary.
Catholics make Mary another mediator who competes with Christ.
Calling Mary the Mother of God is wrong because God is eternal and cannot have a mother.
The Bible doesn't teach the Immaculate Conception.
Mary called God her Savior, so she could not have been conceived without sin.
Romans 3:23 says all have sinned, so Mary could not have been sinless.
Mary had other children after Jesus, so she was not perpetually a virgin.
The Bible doesn't teach Mary's Assumption.
Catholics believe Mary ascended into heaven by her own power.
Jesus rebuked a woman for honoring his mother (Luke 11:27–28).
Images and Relics
The Bible forbids making religious images.
Catholics believe relics have magical powers.

General
Catholics believe sacraments work automatically, regardless of the recipient's disposition.
Baptism
Baptism is only an outward symbol of salvation.
The Bible doesn't teach that baptism washes away sins.
Catholics believe baptism saves people regardless of their faith or repentance.
Catholics believe baptism is magic.
Infants shouldn't be baptized because they cannot profess faith.
Confession
Christians should confess their sins directly to God, not to a priest.
Catholics believe the priest forgives sins by his own power.
Catholics believe they can sin all they want and simply go to confession.
The Eucharist
The Lord's Supper is only a memorial meal.
Jesus was speaking figuratively when he said, "This is my body."
The Bible doesn't teach transubstantiation.
Catholics believe the bread and wine become ordinary human flesh and blood.
Worshiping the consecrated host is idolatry.
The sacrifice of the Mass contradicts Christ's once-for-all sacrifice.
Catholics believe they crucify Jesus again at every Mass.

Salvation
Catholics deny that salvation is a free gift.
Faith and Works
Catholics believe they can earn their way into heaven.
Catholics believe in salvation by works instead of faith.
Catholics believe that being a good person is enough to get to heaven.
The Bible teaches justification by faith alone.
Good works are merely evidence of salvation; they do not contribute to it.
Isaiah 64:6 says all our righteous deeds are filthy rags, so we cannot merit anything from God.
The Assurance of Salvation
Once someone is truly saved, salvation can never be lost.
Catholics believe nobody can know whether they're in God's grace.
Paul taught that we can know with certainty that we are eternally saved.
Purgatory
Purgatory is a second chance to be saved after death.
Purgatory means Christ's sacrifice wasn't sufficient.
There is no biblical basis for Purgatory.
The word "Purgatory" never appears in the Bible.
Paul taught that when Christians die they go immediately to be with Christ. There is no Purgatory.
The early Christians did not believe in Purgatory.
Catholics believe everyone must spend thousands of years in Purgatory.
Praying for the dead is useless because their eternal destiny is already settled.
Indulgences
Indulgences are permission to commit sins.
Catholics can buy forgiveness from God.
Indulgences have no biblical foundation.
———— Scripture and Tradition ————
The Bible
The Catholic Church denies that the Bible is inspired and inerrant.
For centuries the Catholic Church forbade Catholics to read the Bible.
The deuterocanonical books
The Catholic Church added the deuterocanonical books to the Bible at the Council of Trent.
The Jews never accepted the deuterocanonical books as Scripture.
None of the deuterocanonical books claims to be inspired.
No council of the Church recognized the deuterocanonical books during the first four centuries.
The New Testament never quotes the deuterocanonical books as Scripture.
The deuterocanonical books lack the distinctive characteristics of inspired Scripture.
Sola Scriptura
The Bible teaches that Scripture alone is our only infallible rule of faith.
Catholics believe the Church is above the Bible.
The Bereans tested Paul's teachings against Scripture, proving sola Scriptura.
Second Timothy 3:16–17 teaches that Scripture is sufficient by itself.
Paul told the Corinthians not to go beyond what is written (1 Corinthians 4:6).
Tradition
The Bible rejects tradition as a source of divine revelation.
The Bible tells us everything necessary for salvation, so we don't need Sacred Tradition.
Catholics believe every tradition practiced in the Church is infallible.
